Xbox enthusiasts have spent years requesting the ability to customize their console's boot sequence. Microsoft has finally answered the call in the latest Xbox Insider preview ring, rolling out a dedicated Startup Screen Customizer that lets players swap out the default Series X|S animation for iconic retro boots.

Reliving 25 Years of Green Silicon History

The new feature, accessible under Settings > General > Personalization > Startup Animation, brings back the legendary 2001 original Xbox bios screen—complete with the bubbling bio-mechanical green core, sci-fi mechanical audio sweeps, and the glowing shield insignia.

Additionally, players can choose the white-and-silver orb burst from the Xbox 360 era, the pulsating emerald crystal of the Xbox 360 Slim, or the minimalist geometric snap introduced with the Xbox One launch in 2013.

  • Original Xbox (2001): Faithfully remastered in 4K with authentic FMV audio rendering.
  • Xbox 360 Ring of Light (2005): The clean white-and-silver circular splash that heralded the HD console generation.
  • Xbox One Emerald Ribbon (2013): The deep bass-boosted acoustic chime and flat-vector geometry of the eighth-gen launch.
  • Dynamic Seasonal Specials: Rotating limited-time boots celebrating flagship game anniversaries like Halo and Gears.

Power Modes and Boot Sequence Performance Impact

One of the key technical considerations Microsoft addressed during development was impact on cold boot times. On Xbox Series X and Series S, the internal custom NVMe SSD boots the OS in under 12 seconds from total shutdown. The custom startup animations are dynamically scaled so they never delay your arrival at the dashboard.

“Boot screens are emotional anchors for gamers. Hearing that 2001 bio-mechanical synth flare on an LG OLED running at 120Hz is pure magic.”

Community Feedback and Future Roadmap

Alpha Skip-Ahead insiders have praised the inclusion of retro chimes, with many calling for community custom uploads or tie-in animations for specific franchises like DOOM, Fallout, and Fable.

Xbox engineers have noted that user-created custom MP4 boot animations are being explored under strict moderation constraints to prevent display burn-in on modern OLED panels.

How to Test the Feature Right Now

If you are enrolled in the Xbox Insider Program on either the Alpha or Alpha Skip-Ahead rings, check for OS build 2609.240910-2200 or later in your System Updates screen.

General public availability across all Xbox Series X and Series S consoles worldwide is expected with the upcoming system software update.
