The next generation of Xbox hardware could arrive in stages. A new report points to a handheld first, followed by the more powerful home system known as Project Helix. The proposed schedule gives players a clearer picture of what might come next, although Microsoft has not announced those retail launch dates.

What the latest hardware report claims

VGC reports, citing a Fortune profile, that the handheld is targeting holiday 2027 and the console holiday 2028. The same reporting describes an internal consumer price projection of $1,200 to $1,800 for Helix, potentially affected by whether Microsoft subsidizes the hardware.

Those figures are planning estimates. They do not establish a launch price, preorder window, regional price list, or final product specification. A projection made during development can change before a device reaches stores.

What Microsoft has confirmed about Project Helix

In its GDC development update, Xbox identified Helix as its next first-party console and described a design intended to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft also confirmed a custom AMD system-on-chip and plans to begin shipping alpha hardware to developers in 2027.

Developer hardware is an important milestone, but its delivery schedule does not automatically determine a consumer release date. Studios still need time to build, test, and optimize software around the platform.

Why the operating system matters

The practical question for players extends beyond processing power. A successful device needs a comfortable controller interface, reliable updates, clear game compatibility information, and a straightforward way to access purchases. Our view is that those everyday details will strongly influence whether a premium Xbox device feels worth its price.

Compatibility will deserve particular attention. A broad promise about console and PC games should not be treated as a guarantee that every storefront, peripheral, disc, or individual title will work identically. Buyers will need Microsoft’s final compatibility documentation to assess their own libraries.

This video provides technology context for the AMD and Xbox partnership. It is not a product reveal for the reported handheld.

What to watch for next

The decisive announcements will be official retail dates, final specifications, supported game libraries, and regional pricing. Until those arrive, the reported roadmap is useful context for following Xbox hardware development, rather than a confirmed purchase timetable.
