In an era dominated by high-budget 3D blockbusters, Obsidian Entertainment released Pentiment—a 16th-century historical murder mystery presented entirely in the art style of illuminated manuscripts, woodcuts, and early printed engravings. Conceived by narrative master Josh Sawyer, it is one of the most intellectually rewarding video games ever made.

Andreas Maler’s Investigation Across 25 Years

Taking place in the fictional Bavarian village of Tassing and the nearby Benedictine Abbey of Kiersau, Pentiment follows journeyman artist Andreas Maler across twenty-five years of historical upheaval during the dawn of the Protestant Reformation.

When a visiting nobleman is murdered and Andreas's mentor is accused of the crime, players must investigate abbey monks, peasant farmers, town millers, and local nobility. You have limited in-game hours each day, meaning you can never pursue every lead before the magistrate arrives to pass judgment.

  • Dynamic Typographic Font System: Dialogue fonts reflect the speaker's social class, education, and religion, complete with ink splatters and spelling corrections.
  • No Objective Canon Truth: The game intentionally never confirms if you convicted the 'true' killer; you must live with the moral consequences of your accusation.
  • Authentic Historical Scholarship: Every Latin hymn, legal dispute, theological debate, and meal recipe was developed with historical manuscript consultants.

“Pentiment was a dream project. We wanted to make a game where history feels alive, messy, human, and deeply personal.”

The Human Cost of Accusation

When the magistrate carries out the execution of the person you named, the town of Tassing is permanently scarred. Seeing how your choices reverberate across decades—as children grow into bitter adults—is narrative storytelling at its absolute apex.
