Surviving Year One: Timber, Firewood, and Food

Your first year as Lord determines whether your peasantry survives or freezes to death in the snow. Immediately upon placing your hitching post, assign an ox to haul logs and construct a Logging Camp and Firewood Chopper.

Firewood is consumed constantly by peasant families for warmth. Without a stocked storehouse before November arrives, your approval rating will crater and villagers will abandon your fiefdom.

  • Burgage Plot Extensions: Build large backyard extensions on residential plots for chicken coops, vegetable gardens, and goat sheds.
  • Oxen Transport Logistics: Purchase additional oxen early; single oxen cause severe bottlenecks in timber supply chains.
  • Militia Muster System: Equip your common villagers with spears, sidearms, and shields to defend against roaming bandit raiders.

“I wanted to build a medieval simulation that felt truly organic. No rigid grids—just real, historical village growth.”

Backyard Vegetable Gardens: The Unlimited Food Source

The secret to infinite village food stability is drawing extra-long Burgage plots with backyard space. Upgrading these plots with a Vegetable Garden produces a steady harvest of carrots and cabbages year-round that will comfortably feed hundreds of citizens.
