Rare’s place in Microsoft’s studio structure has changed, but the studio remains part of Xbox. A report from The Game Business says Rare is working on projects beyond Sea of Thieves and that Activision will have a say in whether those projects continue.

Rare Has Moved Under Activision Within Xbox

Xbox’s studio reorganization moved Rare and World’s Edge under Activision’s expanded remit. The change is an internal reporting shift: it does not mean Rare has left Microsoft or been sold to another company. Rare is still known publicly for Sea of Thieves, while its previously announced Everwild project was canceled in 2025.

What the Report Says About Rare’s Other Projects

The Game Business reported that Rare is working on other projects, but those projects have not been publicly named. Its coverage also described cuts to the studio’s central operations team following the organizational move. The report’s video discussion said Activision would decide whether the other projects proceed.

Those details come from reporting, not a public project announcement from Rare or Microsoft. There is no confirmed release schedule, game reveal, or announcement that a particular franchise is returning. Speculation about properties such as Banjo-Kazooie should therefore be treated as speculation rather than a confirmed Rare project.

What This Means for Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves remains Rare’s best-known active game, and the report does not announce that its support is ending. It also does not provide a new roadmap for the game. The practical question raised by the coverage is whether Activision’s review of Rare’s unannounced work changes which projects receive continued support.

Until Rare, Xbox, or Activision confirms the projects and their status, the studio’s next release beyond Sea of Thieves remains unknown.
